The Lighthouse Challenge of New Jersey takes place each year on the third weekend of October, this year October 18 & 19. The object of the challenge is to visit all 11 New Jersey Lighthouses as well as 2 lifesaving stations and one lighthouse museum. The trip takes you along the Jersey Coast from Sandy Hook to Cape May and then up the Delaware Bay Coast through Cumberland and Salem counties. Although most people take the two days to complete the challenge, last year one man on his motorcycle completed it on Saturday and enjoyed it so much, he turned around and did it again on Sunday.
The challenge itself is free although there is a small ($1 - $2) one time registration fee that lets you collect the challenge souvenir at each stop. You can register and begin the challenge at any of the participating stops. If you complete the challenge and visit all 14 stops, you receive a completion sticker and you are automatically entered in a raffle to win a prize basket worth $1000. Additionally, some of the stops have raffles of their own for prizes that you can enter as you visit that stop. Some of the lighthouses charge a fee to climb to the top, although that is not required to complete the challenge and is totally optional. This year the challenge is celebrating its 15th year, as well as New Jersey’s 350th anniversary and Sandy Hook Lighthouse’s 250th anniversary. The souvenirs that are collected at each stop are specific to that lighthouse, museum or lifesaving station and can be collected and saved. www.lhchallengenj.org
